Derbyshire road blocked off and people advised to stay away after hazardous asbestos found.
THE road between Chellaston and Aston-on-Trent has been closed after hazardous asbestos was found.
Derby City Council has closed Aston Lane and Chellaston Lane between the two places while contractors come to clear it.
The asbestos is located about 200 metres up the Chellaston part of Aston Lane.
A council spokeswoman said this was to “prevent people from driving over it and spreading it further”.
She said: “The risk is relatively low as it is in a wide, open space on a country road and is undisturbed. However, we would advise staying away from the area until it has been removed by professionals.”
The deadly strands appear to have been in corrugated roofing of the type usually found on a garage or shed.
Though the lane has been notorious for fly-tipping, a council spokeswoman said it looked as if, in this case, the material had fallen from a vehicle.
The spokeswoman said: “Pictures of what has happened have been sent to contractors so they can assess how long it’s going to take to remove.”
A council employee at the scene said the authority had been told about the asbestos by South Derbyshire District Council but did not know when.
Steve Clarke, 53, of Willowbank Grange, whose home is adjacent to Aston Lane, said what had happened was concerning.
He said: “It’s pretty terrible. I would be concerned if it’s being transported around on the back of a truck.
“It seems to me that of they’ve done something that they might not be complying with the law. Surely it’s got to be done safer than that.”
Mr Clarke said the lane, which is partially single track was sometimes misused by fly-tippers and careless drivers.
A police spokesman had previously said callers rang them about the incident from 8.55pm last night.
He said details were passed on to the highways authority (Derby City Council).
